This is a two act play.
The action of the play takes place in the kitchen dining room of the family home, the heart of the household. The set must indicate a family who has made certain social advances which are indicated by the possession of modern appliances, e.g. a television and a refrigerator. However, these modern comforts and the general comfort of the home disintegrate throughout the play until the remaining characters are forced to sit on fruit boxes.
A good deal of the noise and activity on stage is associated with the preparation, serving and consumption of food. Other key props include the newspaper which Chicho lies in bed reading, pretending to compose tangos, and the gifts which Don Francisco brings to la nona on the day of their civil ceremony.
