Scene

The play is divided into two acts. The action takes place over a number of months in 1938.

Staging

The play is set in an old house which becomes progressively more damaged by air raids. One of the soldiers, Sopla, has a motorbike. At the end of the play Trini drives off in Mariano’s truck. Throughout, the sound of gunfire and bombs can be heard. In act 2 Juan’s bedroom is completely destroyed by a bomb. Later in this act, as characters shelter in the ruins of the house, we see flashes of explosions and bursts of flames.

Music

The characters dance to La Cucaracha in act 1.
