Barranca abajo (c.1905), Florencio Sánchez

Scene

This is a three act play.

Staging

The first act of Barranca abajo is set outdoors, on the patio of an old and established Uruguayan estancia.  The second and third act take place in the poor, more modest property to which the family have moved.  At the beginning of the third act an iron bed stripped bare is on stage and indicates that Zoilo’s daughter, Robustiana, has died.

At the end of the play Zoilo hangs himself with a rope.  Before that he hands his gaucho’s knife to the character of Aniceto.
