Noel Road 25: a genius like us (2001), Carlos Be

The play is divided into 12 scenes (or ‘capsules’) that jump backward and forward in time. They have the following titles:

  • Post Mortem
  • Sodom
  • La Mamma Morta I
  • First Time: Present
  • Second Time: Past
  • Interview
  • Doppelganger
  • Bondage
  • La Mamma Morta II
  • Respect
  • Depressive Moods
  • Requiem

The play is set in the apartment shared by Joe and Ken. The back of the room is dominated by a collage of photographs, most of them of naked men in erotic poses. A number of images stand out, including the acronym INRI, which in this context stands for ‘I Now Represent Idiots’. There is also an image of Jesus Christ being crucified on a Union Jack with the phrase ‘Ego Sum Ergo Deus Est’. A picture of the British Museum with its roof turned upside down is accompanied by the words ‘Culture Market’. Lastly, there is a picture of a skeletal monk and a strange nun seated beside a smaller painting entitled ‘Was Rosencrantz Jesus Christ?’

The apartment contains a record player and a telephone. There is an old rug on the ground. At various points, Joe’s battered body lies wrapped in it. At the beginning of the play, Joe only wears socks and red underwear.

In scenes 1 and 2 Ken listens to the song Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child. In scene 4 Joe dances obscenely to the tune Brazil.
