La llamada de Lauren (1984), Paloma Pedrero Díaz-Caneja

Scene

The action of the play takes place over one evening and in one room. There are no divisions into acts or scenes.

Staging

La llamada de Lauren (Lauren’s Call) takes place in a one-room apartment set on two levels. The back of the stage houses a kitchen area. The front, the bedroom and living area. On the right of the stage stands a table with four chairs. The stage directions also refer to a bookshelf and other household objects. The bedroom area is to the left of the stage. Here, there is a bed and bedside tables. A wardrobe with a full-length mirror stands against the wall. The walls are decorated with tasteful posters and paintings. On the ground sit flowerpots/plant pots. On the table there is a range of makeup - eyeshadow, blusher etc. At the beginning of the play, one chair is covered by a wavy, light chestnut wig. The one door in the apartment leads to the bathroom, which is not visible.

At the beginning of the play Rosa gives her husband flowers. Pedro gives her a bottle of champagne.

Many directors have emphasised the relationship between the play and black and white films, using spotlights and black and white sets.

Costume

Clothing is particularly important in this play. At the play’s opening, Pedro appears in a bathrobe. He then changes into black satin tights and alluring underwear. He stuffs his chest with cotton wool underneath a bra. He also wears black high-heeled shoes and a black satin dress.

Rosa‘s carnival outfit is a man’s suit, in the style of Humphrey Bogart. She requires a band of cloth or a large bandage to flatten her chest. She sports a bow-tie, a hat, a false moustache, sideburns and a cigar. Pedro also gives Rosa a dildo that he wants her to wear.

Music

At the beginning of the play a radio plays classical music. Pedro then puts on an album of old movie tunes and the song To Have and To Have Not, sung by Lauren Bacall, is heard on stage.
