Critical response

This production was surrounded by a buzz because Echegaray was supposed to be attending, although in the end he did not. Despite this, the production was a huge success and played to packed houses. Even the critics enjoyed the play, lauding its epic quality and depth (Crespo Pérez 2006: 17).

Fernando Díaz de Mendoza’s performance of Ernesto was highly commended, in that he managed to inject new life into a role that was, by now, very familiar to Spanish audiences (Crespo Pérez 2006: 31).

Critical response

Even though Echegaray had won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1904, by the turn of the century the popularity of his plays had waned and were not performed as frequently as before. Indeed, this production was not a great success, as the play was now being criticised for being antiquated (Crespo Pérez 2006: 46-7).
